Marlboro, MA — WPI Football’s graduate student Josh Castro (Pittsburgh, PA) and junior Carter Learned (Reading, MA) earned New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Postseason Awards as voted on by the conference’s coaches following the conclusion of the regular season and announced by the NEWMAC office on Thursday.
Castro boasted earning his first postseason nods from the NEWMAC as he earned two, one for his efforts as a punter on the all-conference first All-Conference First Team and one as a wide receiver on the Second Team. The graduate student served as a jack-of-all-trades for the Engineers as he lined up as the primary punter and totaled 2,675 yards including a school-record and career-long punt of 94 yards to average 44.6 yards per boot in 2025. The foot of Castro led to seven touchbacks and seven fair catches while recording 22 punts inside the 20-yard line and 20 attempts at 50+ yards in nine games played.
On the offensive side, Castro continued to showcase his versality as he compiled 36 receptions for a total of 435 yards including a season-long 38-yard reception in a game where he totaled 110 receiving yards and a receiving touchdown in a 15-13 win at Husson. The wide receiver-punter aficionado averaged 12.1 yards per catch and 48.3 yards per game while tacking on two receiving touchdowns and further intertwined himself in the Crimson and Gray’s offense with two rushes for 22 yards.
Learned boosted his production this fall as he led the team with 48 solo tackles and assisted on 37 for 85 total tackles in nine games played for WPI in 2025 en route to receiving his first-career All-NEWMAC nod on the Second Team. Learned included a sack, forced fumble, pass breakup and interception for the WPI defense.
WPI finished 2-8 overall and 1-6 in the NEWMAC in 2025.
