41st over – Atkinson comes in from the other end

With the wind, he has Doggett ducking under a bouncer.

Lovely cut shot from Doggett, waiting on it neatly before playing to backward point – there was no run though as the fielder is right there.

Another bouncer, again Doggett gets under the ball.

SHOT! First runs in Test cricket for Brendan Doggett! Off the back foot, a lofted square drive and he gets two.

Up the darts

If this is what we get from this one day cricket rubbish then I’m done. The bash crash cricket is killing test cricket. Players can not adjust and the batting is disgraceful. Will drop off very quickly me if it goes on as I believe it will. Thinking DARTS will do me. True professionals performing professionally.

40th over – Mark Wood will open up today

Brendan Doggett has not faced a ball in Test cricket yet. Here’s Mark Wood to introduce him to the rigours demanded.

Australia getting another 15 or so runs here would be massive.

England getting a wicket in this first over will be huge.

Here comes Mark Wood, but the umpire isn’t ready so Wood has to abort. Nitin Menon laughs at Wood, who laughs back, before putting his game face back on.

Two slips, gully, short leg and Wood opens up with a 140.8kmh loosener outside off stump.

Doggett hops on his toes to defend the next one as Jerusalem rings out.

Bouncer, Doggett gets under it.

“BARMY ARMY!” rings around Perth stadium as the English fans make themselves heard. That next ball angles into Doggett, who is hopping away and getting an inside edge onto his pads.

Down the leg side, off the thigh pad and it’s a leg bye, so Doggett is still waiting for his first Test run.

Brilliant yorker first up for Nathan Lyon, who does well to dig that out and get his bat down before it crushes his big toe.

Out come the players

There are a fair few empty seats at Perth Stadium as the players walk out to the middle.

Given the rate the play progressed yesterday, you wouldn’t want to be too late to your seat, I wouldn’t have thought…

Panic? Panic.

I didn’t mean to predict Weatherald having a tough time yesterday but on that note

If Usman is injured for the next test where to from here ?

– Tom

It’s taken six-and-a-half hours of cricket for fans to freak out and try to shuffle the decks.

The same thing happened after day one of last year’s series against India if I remember correctly.

Usman Khawaja’s place in the team was the quiet concern coming into the series. He was only a lock because the other opening spot was so up for grabs.

The fact he batted yesterday suggests he isn’t completely crocked (although his batting was nothing to write home about) and back spasms can come good in time. But if he doesn’t get runs in the opening two Tests, his position will come under scrutiny, with the likes of Matt Renshaw and Campbell Kellaway in the wings.

We’ll be watching closely as the next round of Shield cricket kicks off today.

Early fireworks

Brydon Carse and Marnus Labuschagne both like a bit of a contest out in the middle and they came together on day one.

The England seamer was pretty diplomatic when asked about it after play.

England gives as good as it gets

Dean Bilton is in Perth for this one and wrote about the chaos of day one, the ultimate bowler’s day for both teams:

In truth, you may never be able to count this England out of any Test. Not with its appetite for the impossible, and not with this bowling attack.

Cricket has been waiting some years for this collection of bowlers to make its way to Australia. Ever since that day at Lord’s in 2019, when Jofra Archer’s thundering footsteps could be heard from the other side of the world, the prospect of him on our shores permeated the imagination.

This was high pace and high danger, the sort of bowling more casually attributed to Australian attacks.

What Australia must do on day two

Australia finds itself trailing England by 49 runs with a wicket in hand as play gets underway today.

Darren Lehmann tells ABC Sport that if this Test goes to a fourth day, it means England has won.

“Try and slog 20 as quick as you can,” Lehmann says.

“It’s nice conditions to bowl, it’s not hot. They [the Australian bowlers] won’t be sore, so they’ll be able to crank it up today.”

Lehmann says anything in excess of 280 will be a tough chase for Australia in the fourth innings.

Grandstand At Stumps

Before play starts on day two, listen to the post-stumps wrap from the ABC Radio crew, including ex-Test stars Darren Lehmann and Tom Moody.

Well, I didn’t expect to be saying this before play on day two of the Ashes, but we’re just about set for the third innings of this match.

After a frankly ridiculous 19 wickets fell on day one, England needs just one more to put Australia back into the field and resume batting to try and post a hefty total for the hosts to chase.

The game has moved at an almighty pace thus far, so there’s no rush, but I wouldn’t expect the English batters to calm down too much. It’s not really their go. So expect more fireworks today.

Me, Simon Smale, Chris De Silva and Dean Bilton are all back in the saddle for today’s action, so stick with us and send us all your takes.
