Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez underlined his pound-for-pound credentials with a one-sided beatdown of Fernando ‘Puma’ Martinez in their super flyweight unification clash.

Rodriguez (23-0, 16 KOs) headed into the bout against a fellow undefeated world champion in Martinez (18-1, 9 KOs), but from the first bell, the gulf in class was abundantly clear.

The WBC and WBO champion was on his way to a shutout victory long before a showreel one-punch knockout in round 10 divested the brave Martinez of his WBA title.

Martinez’s former IBF championship, which will be contested by Willibaldo Garcia and Kenshiro Teraji in Riyadh next month, is the only major prize outside of Rodriguez’s possession at 115 pounds. It’s probably only a matter of time until this brilliant fighting machine owns that as well.

After a tempestuous build-up and a fiery weigh-in, both men got down to business — Rodriguez digging to the body and Martinez roaring back with an overhand right. Bam swung himself off his feet looking for a big shot in the opener, but settled nicely into his boxing in the second, when a check left hook backed up Martinez..

By round three, Rodriguez was clearly operating at a level beyond his foe. He moved forward elegantly, pivoting off his front foot to open up a beguiling array of angles. After absorbing several head shots, Martinez trudged back to his corner, blowing blood out of his nose.

Puma responded with some nice work to the body in four, but it merely punctuated a one-way story. Rodriguez’s lead right hook was a delight for everyone but the man on the receiving end.

Martinez’s corner urged their fighter to come out quickly for the fifth. That simply ran him into a peach of a right uppercut. The round ended with Martinez half blocking a shuddering short left hook off the jab. According to CompuBox, Rodriguez had landed 106 more punches by halfway. Martinez had managed seven successful jabs in six rounds.

A yelping Martinez threw big rights early in round eight before eating a sweet uppercut. In the next session, Bam stepped under a Martinez overhand right and connected with a withering short left hook that staggered his foe back into the corner.

That was a warning sign and a final rehearsal from an imperious champion ready to close the show in style. Martinez got home with a right-left combination, arguably his best work of the fight. It counted for nought seconds later when Bam dodged the big right and uncorked his left hook onto the point of Puma’s chin. The brave Argentine was left flat on his back and unable to answer the count.
