A land and sea search for a young man swept out to sea on the NSW Central Coast has resumed.

Emergency service crews were called to Norah Head at about 8:15pm on Sunday after a sand bar off the Soldiers Beach Surf Life Saving Club collapsed.

A 16-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man managed to get back to shore, but two other 18-year-olds were swept out to sea.

Two surfers rescued one of them, but the other disappeared.

A search involving the region’s rescue helicopter, water police and Marine Rescue volunteers continued until 11:30pm, and patrols of the foreshore continued throughout the night.

The full-scale search was due to resume at 7am.

Jim Wright from Lake Macquarie Marine Rescue said he expected jetskis and helicopters to be involved.

“It’s very important we get the services out there quickly [to] carry out the search,” he said.

Police said they were supporting the missing man’s family and keeping them updated.
