Charles Godden went to Perth’s famous Cottesloe Beach on Monday for a swim. He was supposed to be at the cricket. But the team he travelled literally half-way around the world to barrack for crashed out of the first Ashes Test in just two days.

Godden, from Chichester south of London, is among thousands of British tourists who had optimistically planned on a five-day match but were left at a loose end in the West Australian capital by the English team’s disastrous start to the Ashes tour.
