The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed veteran defenceman Brendan Smith to a one-year, two-way contract on Monday.
Smith, who had been skating with the team’s AHL affiliate, the Cleveland Monsters, will join the Blue Jackets on Tuesday. He had one assist in 11 games with Cleveland and had played with Columbus in training camp on a PTO.
Smith, 36, spent the 2024-25 season with the Dallas Stars, appearing in 32 games, scoring one goal with five assists. He did not suit up in any playoff games.
A first-round pick (27th overall) by the Detroit Red Wings in 2007, Smith made his NHL debut on Nov. 17, 2011 against the San Jose Sharks.
The Mimico, Ont., native has skated in 726 career NHL games, scoring 39 goals with 144 points, split between the Red Wings, New York Rangers, Carolina Hurricanes, New Jersey Devils and Stars.
