60 girls have taken part in a first-of-its kind collaboration between Boxing and Athletics in Belfast, aimed at empowering young women through sport.

Originated and developed by IABA Ulster Participation & Engagement Officer Louise McKenzie, this cross community programme included pupils in Years 8 & 9 from Newry High School and St. Mary’s High School, Newry

Over four weeks, the students were given the opportunity to try new sports and build confidence while learning to be proud, and to do anything ‘Like a Girl’

The finale event, held today in Newry Leisure Centre began with a confidence building workshop with Glow Girls by Gemma, followed by taster sessions delivered by Ulster Boxing, Athletics NI and Netball NI.

The programme and today’s finale were supported by IABA High Performance boxers, double Olympian Michaela Walsh, and Kaci Rock, alongside Athletics NI Elite athlete, Rachel McCann.

Sandra Gray, a coach from from St. Monica’s BC in Newry assisted IABA Ulster Female Participation coach, Lynsey McMillan in delivering a boxing session to participants.
