We’ve all been there — you’ve missed a delivery, swung by Australia Post to collect it, and found a queue stretching out the door. It’s a familiar frustration for Australians everywhere, and one that always seems to rear its head when you’re in a rush.

But now, if you live near certain locations, there’s a simple and much faster solution.

Yahoo News attended an inner-city Sydney store this week and found that, for app users specifically visiting the post office to collect a parcel, there’s a brand new queue.

While there may be dozens waiting for other services, if you’ve got the app and are simply waiting to pick it up, there’s a new system that’s designed to speed up collections in the Christmas lead-up.

The trial is currently operating in 25 stores across Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

Australia Post Executive General Manager, Retail, Brand and Marketing, Josh Bannister, told Yahoo News that so far, it’s only going to run during the Christmas period.

But the company will “monitor how this trial performs and how and when customers use the queue”.

“Each year we see parcel volumes surge in the lead-up to Christmas, and we know how important it is for our customers to get their parcels quickly and conveniently,” he said.

“This trial is designed to speed up wait times this Christmas and ease congestion for customers visiting for longer transactions.”

Customers collecting a parcel now have the option to join the dedicated app-only queue, only available with the Aus Post app open on their phone, giving them a faster, “smoother experience” at trial Post Offices, Bannister added.

The end of the year is the busiest period for Australia Post, with Black Friday sales, Christmas and Boxing Day in the space of a month.

In response, it employs an additional 3000 staff for the holiday period nationwide.
