Australia Women 31 v Japan Women 7
Australia has started their Dubai title defence with a 31-7 win over Japan.
It was the co-captains who set the tempo with Bella Nasser’s pilfer penalty providing the turnover for Teagan Levi to strike, followed by Madison Ashby setting up Faith Nathan for a 12-7 lead.
Maddison Levi got in on the action in the second half with a double as the Aussies fended off some quality fightback from Japan.
Nasser sealed the win with three minutes left, running 90 metres for a 14-point swing after the Japanese incredibly dropped the ball over the line untouched 30 seconds earlier.
Australia Men 14 v Spain Men 7
Australia have impressed with a 14-7 win over last year’s runner-ups, Spain.
It was a wild contest that saw the Aussies respond to an early Spanish try via returning star Dietrich Roache and young gun Wallace Charlie.
There were three disallowed tries in the second half, with Maurice Longbottom pulling off an excellent try-saver, while a pair of forward passes denied five points for the Australians.
Rookie Ethan McFarland proved the hero, coming up with the clutch ankle tap to stop a last-minute Spain attack to level the scores and win the game.
