ONE nugget from last night’s Supercars Gala Awards was a hint dropped on where the championship is looking to create its next New South Wales street circuit.
Since committing to rejoining Supercars as its CEO, James Warburton has been clear about the desire to add to NSW’s presence on the calendar which has been reduced to two (Sydney Motorsport Park and Bathurst) since Newcastle’s demise.
In addressing the industry in Adelaide, Warburton hailed the bumper extension of the Adelaide Grand Final through 2034 before turning his attention elsewhere on marquee calendar items.
“We continue to pursue a season-opener for the ages and we’re working with Perth towards hopefully a 2028 outcome with a stunning opening round to our championship,” he said.
“In addition, we are also working with the NSW government to replace Newcastle with some options which would be extraordinary.”
It was at that point that, for just a couple of seconds, Central Coast and Wollongong flashed up on screen as said options.
Homebush in Sydney had been a highlight on the Supercars schedule from 2009 to 2016 before being replaced by Newcastle (2017-19, ’23).
Perth will play host to the nation’s newest street circuit, when it takes over from Wanneroo Raceway as the annual round in the west.
SMP will host Round 1 of the 2026 Repco Supercars Championship under lights next February.
