Katie Brennan has stepped down as Richmond’s AFLW captain.

After seven seasons as skipper, Katie Brennan has announced she will step down as captain of Richmond’s AFLW team.

The decision means Brennan’s streak as longest-serving club captain in the AFLW will come to an end at 10 seasons (seven Richmond, three Western Bulldogs). She had been appointed as her team’s leader for each season since the competition’s inception.

Brennan has long been a unanimous choice as captain since she arrived at Richmond in 2020, due to her unwavering commitment as a devoted leader, a standard setter, and an extremely caring teammate.

Brennan has been a powerful role model both on and off the field in her time as skipper, representing the Club and herself in the best possible manner across her captaincy.

A driving force behind the Tigers’ two Finals campaigns since entering the AFLW, Brennan’s voice and presence amongst the Club will continue to help lead Richmond into the future and develop the next crop of leaders in the program.

“I am proud and humbled to have had the opportunity to lead our great Club over the last seven seasons, alongside some truly phenomenal people, past and present,” Brennan said.

“Being trusted by your peers to lead is a great honour, and I feel deep gratitude for the journey and the moments afforded.

“The timing feels right, for our program and for our future.

“I’m equally proud and excited to pass the baton to our next leader. Our future leaders are seriously impressive.

“We have both established, and emerging, leaders in this group who are going to drive this Club into its next era.”

Brennan is a two-time AFLW All Australian (2021, 2022), four-time Richmond Leading Goalkicker (2021, 2022, 2023, 2024), and finished runner-up in the Tigers’ 2021 Best and Fairest count.

Brennan announced her decision at Richmond’s AFLW Best and Fairest on Tuesday night.
