Powerhouse newcomer Setu Tu is poised to push tryscoring ace Tyrell Sloan out of the Dragons‘ top side for the start of the new season.

Sloan scored 17 tries in 20 games last season – double the next best player in the Red V.

But the Dragons are attempting to offload the enigmatic winger, who is contracted for next season but whose defence has been questioned many times in recent seasons.

Sources at the Dragons have told Wide World of Sports that Tu, who starred in the Warriors‘ reserve grade grand final winning side this year, is training in the backline ahead of Sloan over the summer.

The 27-year-old is yet to play an NRL game but is a proven performer at NSW Cup level, notching 13 tries in 14 appearances and averaging over 100 run metres for the Warriors last season.

The dynamic winger came to terms with the Dragons for two years last month, much to the delight of head coach Shane Flanagan.

“We’re excited to be bringing Setu to the club,” Flanagan said at the time.

“He’s elusive, athletic, robust; he ticks a lot of boxes for us. He’s good in the air, plays with a lot of confidence, and is a genuine try-scorer. His versatility across the backline will add some valuable depth into our squad.

“We look forward to him joining the club for a big preseason.”

If Tu continues to impress over the off season, he could be set for a dream NRL debut – under the bright lights in Las Vegas in late February.
