Let’s take a closer look at the Pirelli strategies for the season finale: it is Max Verstappen versus Lando Norris at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. All eyes are on the Pirelli choices at Yas Marina, where the title will be decided. Pole-sitter Max Verstappen and his rival Lando Norris will line up on the front row for a finale that promises uncertainty: only one of them will come out on top. Statistics show that in the last ten years, the driver starting from pole position in Abu Dhabi has gone on to win the race.
The Yas Marina Circuit is known for its hidden traps and potential surprises, and the Pirelli strategy outlook for the Grand Prix highlights two contrasting approaches among the teams.
It is particularly interesting to note that McLaren is the only team to have kept two brand-new sets of hard tyres. Most others, including Red Bull, preferred the alternative option with two sets of medium tyres. The most favourable—and generally the quickest—strategy remains a one-stop race. However, a two-stop approach cannot be ruled out for some teams. Overall, McLaren has chosen a more conservative plan, Pirelli explained.
Abu Dhabi 2025 race strategies: how many pit stops?
Those choosing to start on the medium compound can schedule their pit stop between lap 20 and lap 26 before switching to the hard tyre for the final part of the race. Alternatively, teams may begin on the hard compound and then move to the soft tyre after lap 39 to lap 45.
Two-stop strategies appear slightly less competitive, mainly because overtaking in Abu Dhabi remains particularly difficult. The most effective combinations for the first two stints involve running on mediums and hards. Teams must also consider track evolution and the potential for graining, which could not be fully assessed yesterday. In this situation, it will be up to the drivers to manage tyre wear carefully all the way to the chequered flag.
