Bates was introduced to cycling by his father, Ron, and although a very capable exponent of the sport, quickly transitioned, while still competing, into administrative positions at St George Cycle Club. From handicapper to Club Secretary and ultimately twenty seven years as President, Bates has been synonymous with the success of the Club in producing internationally champions. His efforts as Coach and Mentor have seen Gold medals and World Titles proliferate during his tenure.
