Ryan Stevenson has hit back at Chris Sutton after the the Celtic hero branded his criticism of Wilfried Nancy’s footwear as the “dumbest and more backward takes I’ve heard…”
And the former Hearts man’s swipe back at his fellow Record Sport columnist was to remind Sutton of his own cheeky take on Rangers boss Danny Rohl’s choice of footwear!
The gloves – sorry, shoes – are firmly off between the Record Sport columnists after Stevenson had a go at new Celtic boss Nancy for wearing green trainers and using a tactics board during the 2-1 defeat to Hearts on Sunday.
Stevenson was at Celtic Park to see Derek McInnes’ men go three points clear at the top of the Premiership and wasn’t impressed with what he saw from Nancy during his first game in charge.
But Sutton was quick to defend the Frenchman on social media, hitting out at Stevenson. He posted: “Having a go at Wilfried Nancy for wearing green trainers and bringing out a tactics board (to try to get a message across to his players who he has barely coached ) is one of the dumbest and most backward takes I’ve ever heard…”
However, Stevenson has turned the tables on Sutton by highlighting a tweet from the former Hoops hero poking fun at Rangers boss Rohl’s footwear during the German’s first game charge.
Ryan Stevenson posts to his Instagram story
Rohl had been in the Ibrox hotseat for three days before taking charge of his first game away to Brann in the Europa League.
The new boss’ attire was a hot topic after his appointment, given predecessor Russell Martin swerved the traditional club suit and brown brogues look, with fans keen for Rohl to uphold something of an Ibrox tradition.
He confirmed that the usual dress code would be returning, although Sutton couldn’t resist a cheeky dig following the 3-0 defeat in Norway.
Sharing a post from former Daily Record columnist Tam Cowan on Instagram, Stevenson shared an image of Sutton tweeting: “The Brown Brogues not bringing Danny Rohl much luck tonight…” and added his own caption of “There’s always a tweet!” Along with several laughing emojis.
