Springfield, Mass. – December 10, 2025 – Behind a career-high 21 point performance from sophomore Hunter Matteson (Dartmouth, Mass.), the Springfield College men’s basketball team picked up its first league win of the campaign as the Pride downed Coast Guard, 80-73, in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action from inside Blake Arena on Wednesday.
Springfield improved to 3-5 overall and to 1-1 in NEWMAC play, while Coast Guard dropped to 4-3, 0-2.
Matteson registered 21 points on 8-for-11 shooting from the floor to go along with five rebounds and a block. Xoren Livingston (Wayland, Mass.) chipped in with 12 points, two rebounds and two assists, while Sean Harrigan (Pittsfield, Mass.) and Josh Hartley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) recorded 11 points apiece off the bench. John Paulino (New Bedford, Mass.) led the Pride with seven rebounds and nine assists in the win. Luke Farrell guided Coast Guard with 21 points and nine boards in the setback.
Coast Guard held an 8-5 lead less than four minutes into the game before back-to-back layups by Josiah Evely (Toronto, Ontario) ignited a 14-0 run that lasted over six minutes as the Pride pulled out in front 19-8. Over the stretch, Springfield shot 5-for-11 and saw both Matteson and Hartley produce five points before a layup by Farrell cut Springfield’s run. Elijah Parent and Colin Huang buried shots from behind the arc for the visitors eventually cutting the deficit to four at 32-28 with four minutes remaining in the half.Â
Zachary Campbell (Philadelphia, Pa.)Â was able to get past the Coast Guard defense and dunk the ball off a feed from Paulino with 2:42 left, but the Bears scored seven of the final nine points of the half making it a 40-39 tally at the break.
After Matteson opened the scoring with a layup, Trevor Parks buried a trey for Coast Guard tying the score at 42 and forcing Springfield to burn at timeout. It was a back and forth second half as neither team was able to gain more than a two point edge, but both teams were able to gain the lead at some point over the first 13 minutes of the half.
Tied at 61 with seven minutes remaining in regulation, Campbell knocked a three down from the far corner off a feed from Ajay Lopes (Wareham, Mass.) kick starting a 9-2 run for the Pride for an eventual 70-63 advantage. A fastbreak layup from Farrell cut Coast Guard’s deficit to three but Campbell and Harrigan answered to push the Springfield lead back to seven with under three minutes left on the clock. The Pride was forced to seal the contest at the free throw line and knocked down four of six shots to account for the 80-73 final.
Springfield scored 50 of its 80 points in the paint, shot 50.8-percent from the floor (31-for-61) and 66.7-percent from the free throw line (16-for-24). The Pride also held a 38-36 edge on the glass and received 37 of its 80 points off the bench. Coast Guard knocked down nine of 25 attempts from behind the arc and shot at a 42.9-percent clip from the floor this evening.
In two NEWMAC games thus far early in the season, Springfield has shot over 50.0-percent from the floor.
Springfield will return to action on December 31 as the Pride will host the annual Naismith Classic inside Blake Arena. Springfield will open the tournament against Colby at 1:00 pm and also host Oneonta State and Connecticut College.
