People wanting to help alleviate irritating cold and flu symptoms, such as a sore throat, without relying on medicine can make a simple drink at home to aid in relief. Latest figures show that an average of 1,717 patients were in a hospital bed every day last week due to the flu, the highest on record for this time of year.
Whilst it won’t cure the virus itself, the health service deems this more natural approach to be very effective at tackling one of the major symptoms. It uses just three ingredients that you may already have in your kitchen.
The NHS claimed that people might benefit from drinking a hot lemon and honey beverage to soothe a sore throat. The honey can help coat the throat and reduce irritation, while the warm liquid aids in hydration and can help ease congestion. Lemons are also beneficial for colds, primarily due to their high vitamin C content, which supports the immune system.
Aldi sells packs of Wonky Lemons for 89p (working out at 22p each). The budget supermarket also has Squeezy Honey available for £2.39 (with 30p per 100g). If you use one lemon and a bit of honey, it works out to around 52p per serving.
While it won’t cure your cold, a warm honey and lemon drink is a proven, comforting home remedy that eases common symptoms, making you feel better while your body fights the virus. You can adjust the amounts of lemon and honey to suit your taste.

People who consume this homemade mixture should rinse their mouths with plain water afterwards. This is because the acidic lemon juice may contribute to eroding tooth enamel, which can lead to tooth decay.
This mixture should never be given to children under the age of one due to the risk of infant botulism, a rare but serious type of food poisoning. If symptoms persist or worsen, consult a doctor about your condition.

Honey has been shown in studies to be as effective as some over-the-counter cough medicines at suppressing coughs. Warm liquids help maintain hydration, which is essential for recovery from a cold.

Lemons are rich in vitamin C, an antioxidant that supports immune function; however, taking it after cold symptoms begin may not significantly shorten the duration of the illness. The warm vapours from the steaming water can help relieve nasal and chest congestion.
Some people claim that adding a few optional slices of ginger to the brew can also increase the health benefits. The common spice contains anti-inflammatory compounds (gingerols) that can help reduce swelling in the throat and nasal passages, relieving congestion and pain.
