After two decades of searching, scientists have discovered a brand new species of parasitic worm living in the gills of a shark just off Yeppoon in central Queensland. Named Loimos everinghami, it’s the first new species in its genus found in over 50 years, and only the sixth ever recorded.

Lead researcher Dr David Vaughan from Central Queensland University says it’s a very special little worm, and its discovery could open the door to finding many more hidden parasites in Australia’s oceans.
