Why has the NFL left Cam Newton behind? Well, the man himself seems to believe it has more to do with his suitability than his playing ability.

Emmy-award winning journalist Jemele Hill raised that very question on this week’s episode of Funky Friday with Cam Newton. Hill, the podcast’s latest guest, asked the Carolina Panthers‘ all-time leading passer why he thinks he’s no longer playing football.

Newton didn’t hold back in his response . . .

Coincidentally, Newton had a chance to speak to this topic on this past Wednesday’s episode of his other show, 4th & 1 with Cam Newton. While covering this week’s improbable return of quarterback Philip Rivers, he stated that the Indianapolis Colts‘ interest in the 44-year-old (and previously retired) grandfather almost felt like a slap to his face.

Newton, now 36 years old, hasn’t played an NFL down since 2021.

Although he’s yet to officially retire, the former Most Valuable Player has become a fixture in the sports media scene—serving as a regular panelist on ESPN’s First Take and a host for BET’s 106 & Sports.
