Bystander heard dozens of shots

ABC reporter Nick Dole has spoken to a bystander, Nathan Zlatkis, who went outside for a cigarette when he heard the shooting.

“Everyone was running down, two police officers lying down on the ground next to me … there was blood,” Mr Zlatkis said.

“There was screaming and shouting, ‘Get down, get down, get down.'”

Mr Zlatkis says he heard about 50 shots.

“I don’t get scared very easily … [it’s] terrible, terrible.

“It’s been very difficult [for the Jewish community], we are very peaceful people, we don’t believe in violence, violence is against our thinking whatsoever.”

The shooting appears to have taken place at the northern end of Bondi Beach, near or at Bondi Park Playground.

We don’t yet have any information about the target or nature of the shooting, but we can confirm that a Chanukah by the Sea event was scheduled to take place at that playground from 5pm, and had begun.

Today is the first day of Chanukah, or Hanukkah, an eight-day Jewish festival of lights.

16m agoSun 14 Dec 2025 at 9:17amMultiple fatalities, police say

Police say there are multiple fatalities and that there’s no longer an active threat, with two shooters in custody.

ABC reporter Digby Werthmuller is at the scene and has been speaking to police media officers.

“Police believe that there is to be multiple fatalities,” he said.

“They have told me that the active threat, those shooters have been neutralised by police and there’s no ongoing active threat to the public down here in Bondi.

“But it’s very much still an active scene down here with police and ambulance coming and going.

“So they do just want to reiterate for people to stay home and not come down to Bondi.”

The exact number of casualties is still being confirmed.
