We’ve had some major developments to this story overnight, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, intelligence officials and NSW Premier Chris Minns providing updates.  Here are some key points:

Two gunmen opened fire on an event marking the first day of Hanukkah at Bondi Beach on Sunday evening. At least 1,000 people were in attendance.Two of the Bondi Beach gunmen are believed to be father and son. NSW authorities say 16 people, including a 10yo girl, are among the dead. A British-born Rabbi was also among those killed. The gunman is included in the current death toll. The incident has been declared a terrorist attack by NSW Police, with federal authorities also joining the investigation. Police are also investigating whether a third person was allegedly involved in the attack.Thirty-eight people were injured, with 29 people taken to hospital, including police officers responding to the scene. One of our reporters describes the inside of a Sydney hospital responding to the attack as being “like a war zone”. A crime scene has been declared and is still underway in Bondi. It is unclear how long the area will remain a crime scene. US President Donald Trump has described it as a “terrible attack”, while the FBI is pledging to assist Australian agencies.Footage verified by the ABC shows a member of the public wrestling a shotgun out of the hands of one of the attackers. NSW Premier Chris Minns says the act saved lives.A law enforcement source tells the ABC one of the alleged gunmen is Naveed Akram, a man from Sydney’s south-west.

Council of Australian Jewry: Community ‘broken’

Executive Council of Australian Jewry, Alex Ryvchin says his community is grieving and still coming to terms with yesterday’s horrific attack.

“We have to work out what to say to our children,” he told ABC News channel.

“Last night I was talking to my own 12-year-old daughter, who every year, since she was born, was with me at this event.

“But for the grace of god, she would have there. I would have been there.

He said one of the dead was a man in his 90s from his synagogue.

Mr Ryvchin said the man was known for his beaming smile and great advice.

“He would shake my hand and give me some advice about politics or media,”

“He was a great human being.”

Israel has updated its travel advice for Israelis abroad following the terrorist attack at Bondi Beach that killed 15 people.

Israel’s National Security Council has warned Israelis abroad to be vigilant for copy cat attacks.

“It is strongly recommended to avoid unsecured public events, including events at synagogues, Chabad houses, Hanukkah parties, etc,” the National Security Council says.

“Be vigilant when near Jewish/Israeli locations, and report to the security forces if anything out of the ordinary is detected (a suspicious person or object),” the statement says.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says Australia needs to “stamp out” antisemitism in all its forms.

He says he’s already had discussions with Jewish community leaders and the antisemitism envoy.

“We need wrap our arms around Australians. We stand with them, we stand against antisemitism, we will do whatever is necessary to stamp it out,” Albanese says.

“Antisemitism is a scourge. It’s been around for a long period of time. We need to do whatever we can to stamp it out,” he says.

He says the federal government will look at “whatever is necessary”, including any legislative response, following the police investigation.

NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon says two “basic” explosive devices were found at the shooter’s home during last night’s raid.

He says the explosives had not been activated.

Mr Lanyon would not give reporters specifics on the devices and said investigations were ongoing.

NSW premier ‘not going to speculate’ on police actions

Chris Minns has shot back at a journalist who asked about reports police were not firing back at one gunman.

“I’m not going to speculate on that right now,” he says.

“There’s two New South Wales police officers in critical condition in New South Wales hospitals who … could have lost their lives last night.

“I’m not going to go into the circumstances of police officers that returned fire, but I can tell you their bravery, their courage in these circumstances saved countless lives and I would urge everyone not to jump to conclusions.”

Police can leave no stone unturned: NSW premier

NSW Premier Chris Minns has been asked if his government needs to crack down on antisemitism.

Minns says it’s important that police are allowed to conduct an investigation.

“This is a massive terrorist event in Australia’s largest city, targeted on Jewish Australians. We need to get to the bottom of exactly how it happened so we can take steps to ensure it doesn’t happen again,” Minns says.

He says it was important to leave no stone unturned in the police investigation.

Chris Minns says he will be looking at changing gun laws.

“The short answer is yes. We’re looking at that right now,” he says.

“We’re in the early stages of this investigation. New South Wales police need to provide all the details of this inquiry to the government, but I made it clear that we’ll take every step we possibly can to keep our community safe.

“And we’ll be looking at law reform along that route.

“This is an intolerable situation.

“This is an attempt to break apart our social life, to divide Australian against Australian. There’s a massive role for the government, New South Wales police, and regular citizens to play here, to ensure that we keep our community safe, and I won’t hesitate to move legislation if it’s required.”

Shooter had gun licence for 10 years

NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon says the older shooter had a gun licence for 10 years.

So far, we know the shooter had six registered firearms.

Gunmen were staying in Campsie, commissioner says

NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon says the two people who allegedly took part in the attack were staying at an address in Campsie.

“They were staying at an address in Campsie. Their residence is in Bonnyrigg,” Lanyon says.

PM asked about Netanyahu criticism

The PM has been asked about Benjamin Netanyahu’s criticism of his government.

He declines to answer.

“This is a moment for national unity. This is a moment for Australians to come together,” he says.

“That’s precisely what we’ll be doing.”

He adds the AFP will continue to provide “every resource possible”.

NSW police commissioner won’t comment on presence of IS group flag

Mal Lanyon says he won’t comment on the reported presence of a black IS group flag at the scene.

“We’ll look at the motives behind the attack and that’s really as part of the investigation,” he says.

“Our investigation will be thorough and we’ll be happy to provide further information.”

He adds he won’t comment further on ideology at this stage.

Ambulance response involved 123 paramedics: commissioner

NSW Ambulance Commissioner Dominic Morgan says the response to yesterday’s terrorist attack involved 123 paramedics.

Morgan says the first crews were on the scene within 10 minutes.

The ambulance commissioner says paramedics conveyed 24 patients to hospital in the first wave, and then attended to more people who were found deceased.

He says some of the paramedics who responded to the attack were from the Jewish community.

“I’m told the command structures were seamless. The joint agency approach, the ability for paramedics with the support of police to work in these hot zones,” Morgan says.

Increased police presence in Jewish places of community

There will be an increased police presence in Jewish places of community, Mal Lanyon adds.

“We’ll make sure we’re highly visible at places of worship, places that are known to be frequented by the Jewish community, but very much in those suburbs we know we have a large Jewish population,” he says.

“I want make it very clear the New South Wales police will not tolerate the types of violence or the types of antisemitic behaviour we have seen.

“We’ll have 328 officers on the ground this morning as Operation Shelter.”

He adds this is about prevention and response.

NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon says two NSW police officers are in hospital following yesterday’s attack.

He says they are in a critical but stable condition.

“The thoughts of the New South Wales police are with those officers and their families,” Lanyon says.

Albanese says terrorist attack an ‘act of pure evil’

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says Sunday’s Bondi Beach attack was an “act of pure evil” at an iconic Australian location.

The prime minister says all Australian wrap their arms around the Jewish community and that the community stands with them.

“We will do whatever is necessary to stamp out anti-Semitism. It is a scourge and we’ll eradicate it together,” Albanese says.

“The Australian Federal Police and ASIO are working closely with New South Wales authorities and the briefing we’ve just had, we’ve had the AFP there and the AFP commissioner will return to Australia today,” he says.

He says the government will dedicate every single resource to the investigation.

Albanese says flags will fly at half mast today.

He’s thanked world leaders for reaching out to him to pay their respects.
