Leinster vs. Ulster Match of the Week: Evenly Matched URC Clash at Aviva

After a three-week break for European competition play, Leinster and Ulster are set for a good old-fashioned United Rugby Championship clash.

No. 4 Ulster heads to Aviva Stadium on Dec. 19 for its first match of the Champions Cup hiatus against No. 6 Leinster. Action kicks off at 2:45 p.m. ET and streams live on FloRugby.

Both teams sit in the top third of the URC table and are pushing to break into the top three. Despite Leinster’s lower league position, the side has won both of its Champions Cup matches so far, opening with a 45-28 win over Harlequins before earning a 23-15 victory against Leicester.

Ulster dominated Racing 92, 61-7, in Round 1 of Challenge Cup play. The side then suffered a narrow 29-26 loss in Round 2 after Cardiff converted an 80th-minute penalty to break a deadlock.

A look at URC season statistics shows just how closely matched these teams are. Leinster and Ulster are nearly even in tries scored (23-26), penalties conceded (60-60), offloads (79-78) and tackle success (80%-78%). Ulster holds an edge in total points (182-150) and has lost fewer turnovers (65-86), while Leinster boasts a higher lineout success rate (95%-77%).

The teams last met at Aviva Stadium in April, when Leinster claimed a 41-17 victory. With that result and recent Champions Cup success in mind, Leinster enters with confidence, while Ulster looks to lean on its strong URC form.

All signs point to a tightly contested matchup between two sides separated by little more than fine margins.
