Samsung is now rolling out One UI 8 Watch, its Wear OS 6 update, to the Galaxy Watch 4 series in what is probably the smartwatch’s last major software update.
The Galaxy Watch 4 was the debut of Samsung’s big switch to Wear OS from Tizen, and it was very well received. A few years later, the smartwatch keeps chugging along, now getting another major software update in One UI 8 Watch.
This latest update is based on Wear OS 6 and first debuted on the Galaxy Watch 8 series last year. The update has also since rolled out to Watch 7, Watch 6, and Watch 5 devices, but it was never a guarantee that the Watch 4 would even be eligible. There were some rumblings around the possibility back in July, but the only “confirmation” ever posted online was done so without clear sourcing, leaving the answer a mystery until now.
Tarun Vats and SamMobile both spotted the One UI 8 Watch rollout for Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic, with firmware versions R870XXU1JYK4 and R880XXU1JYK4, respectively, for the two Wear OS 6 updates. The update apparently weighs in at around 1GB.

Samsung has never mentioned a firm update timeline for its Galaxy Watch devices running Wear OS, so it’s hard to know for certain what lies in store for the future. But, after four years, it seems likely this is the end of the road for this lineup, at least as far as major OS updates are concerned.
We’ll update this post as Samsung’s One UI 8 Watch update for Galaxy Watch 4 rolls out to more regions such as the US.
