A three-word phrase is what Warwick has bought into this winter: We not me.

The phrase describes the Warriors’ willingness to play as a team and for each other. It was reiterated over and over again following Friday’s game against Cocalico in Denver.

The first to mention it was junior guard Mia Warfel.

Warfel was assigned a task late in the first quarter by coach Erica Lausch, a task that not many players have been able to accomplish successfully this season. Her mission, which Warfel chose to accept, was to guard Cocalico’s Corinne Fair.

“We knew that Corrine is a great shooter and you can’t give her a lot of space,” Lausch said. “We told Mia, just make life as tough as you can for her, because she’ll get shots, but if you can stay closer, hopefully she won’t hurt us too much. So that was our goal.”

The Eagles’ senior, who leads the Lancaster-Lebanon League in 3-pointers made, splashed a shot from a few steps inside of the Eagle logo that marks halfcourt.

After that, Warfel was like a bee on honey.

On a night where Fair could have racked up more, Warfel held her to 14 points in Warwick’s 52-43 victory over Cocalico in a showdown of Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Two powerhouses.

The loss snapped the Eagles’ six-game winning streak.

“We’re both shooters, we’re both athletic,” Warfel said of the matchup with Fair. “My job was to try and shut her down because she’s been shooting how she’s been shooting.”

Warfel did as good a job as anyone has against the Cocalico sharpshooter this season. Warfel, whose battery seemed never ending on Friday night, barreled her way through an onslaught of screens to try to prevent an open look for Fair. Anywhere she went, Warfel followed.

“She keeps going,” Lausch said of Warfel. “She’s a fighter.”

“It’s great having Mia as a teammate,” junior Emerson Overly said. “She’s always uplifting other people on our team. It’s always about we not me with her.”

It set the precedent not only for the rest of the Warriors, but for the others on the court as well.

Friday’s game had an intensity about it from stem to stern, with physicality, good shot making and momentum swings aplenty.

The opening quarter saw the most offense of the game. After missing her first two attempts, Fair nailed back-to-back 3-pointers, one coming from near halfcourt, which warranted the attention of Warfel.

On the Warwick side, Overly made two layups and knocked down a 3. It was 16-16 after the first buzzer and it felt like a shootout was brewing.

The Warriors (3-0 L-L, 3-4) upped their defense in the second quarter, allowing just eight points. Defense turned to offense for Warwick, which fed Grace Myers in the post.

Myers had six of her 14 points in the quarter, and Cocalico (2-1, 6-2) didn’t have an answer for the size differential.

“Emerson brings out left-hand drive and speed,” Warfel said. “She brings some great defense. Grace brings our height and is great around the basket. They are both awesome to have on our team and really bring a lot.”

The staunch Warwick defense limited Cocalico to just six points in the third quarter.

The Warriors carried a 42-30 into the final quarter, but the Eagles refused to go quietly.

Fair rattled home a 3-pointer and got a layup, while Izzy Rios scored seven of her nine points in the fourth quarter, including a big 3-pointer of her own.

Warwick, which entered the keep-away stage of its game plan, had a few turnovers that gave Cocalico some life.

The spotlight again found Warfel, who made 5-of-6 from the foul line to put the game and the Warriors’ third straight win on ice.

“We’ve come together as a team,” Lausch said. “Everybody is about we versus individuals, and they’ve bought into that.”
