The imposition of a nationwide carbon price on the electricity sector would slash the overall cost of the energy transition and remove barriers to investment in critical technologies such as gas, the Productivity Commission has told Treasurer Jim Chalmers.
New modelling by the government’s top economic adviser found that the expansion of the safeguard mechanism to include power generators such as coal, gas, wind and solar could cut the cost of building and operating clean energy projects by 8 per cent from now to 2040.
