An Aussie shopper is asking Cadbury for a “please explain” after finding her Favourites box had a lot of empty space. The supermarket item, which is selling for $7 to $15 at the moment, is a staple gift during the festive season.

But Tenika was surprised when she opened her 680 gram box recently and said it was half empty. Her video was backed up by many Aussies who thought the box should either be filled to the brim, or should be smaller.

Cadbury is owned by Mondelez International, and a spokesperson told Yahoo Lifestyle that they welcome feedback about their products and are “always looking at ways to reduce our packaging”.

“[We] will pass your message on to our Cadbury Favourites team,” they said.

If you want to buy the Favourites box from Coles or Woolworths, there are several options available.

The smallest is a 264 gram box, while the biggest appears to be a 700 gram box.

Inside, they contain some of the best Cadbury chocolates, including Caramilk, Crunchie, Twirl, Moro, Boost, Turkish Delight, Cherry Ripe, and Picnic.

But Tenika’s gripe was with the Marvellous Edition, which has some of the same chocolates, along with the quirky Marvellous range of treats.

The Perth resident said she received the larger size of the Favourites box as a Christmas present.

Excited to tuck into the choccies inside, she wondered whether her box was maybe a mistake and asked whether she’d been “stitched up”.

“I just wanted a little sneaky snack and I was in much disbelief when I opened the box,” she said on TikTok.

“Where is the other half?”

Aussies say it’s about the weight not the box

Tenika posted about her issue on social media and was quickly met with people suggesting it’s not about the packaging, but about the weight.

If the contents inside are the same weight as what’s labelled on the box, there shouldn’t really be an issue.

But Aussies said the box on all types of packaging should reflect the amount of contents that are inside.

“There’s no need to make the box this big if its only gonna be half full,” wrote one person.

“No one looks at a box of Favourites and thinks ‘oh, 680g, that’s acceptable value for that price’. They are looking at the box size. There’s no justification for the box being so much bigger than the contents,” added another.

“Sneaky sneaky Cadbury,” said a third.

Major change hit Cadbury Favourites in 2023

Mondelez International reduced the size of the 570 gram Favourites box to 520 grams two years ago due to soaring costs.

The change also saw the Dream and Flake chocolates replaced with Caramilk and Twirl.

While the company admitted that the change might leave some people disappointed, the change in box size was essential to keep on top of finances.

However, the change in chocolates was just a reflection of changing customer demand.

“Caramilk and Twirl are among our most popular products and rightfully deserve their place in the Cadbury Favourites line-up,” a Cadbury spokesperson told Yahoo Australia in 2023.

“Dream and Flake fans shouldn’t fear, both remain widely available in bar and share-bag formats.”
