Bridgerton season 4 may be a Cinderella story, but its star is no damsel in distress.

Based on Julia Quinn’s beloved book series, the Netflix series centers on its namesake family of lovestruck nobles, with each season highlighting the romantic exploits of a different Bridgerton. After a third season highlighting Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) and Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan), Luke Thompson’s Benedict Bridgerton now steps into the spotlight.

It begins at a masquerade ball, where the bohemian Benedict falls for a masked woman in silver who we learn to be Sophie Baek (Yerin Ha), a maid of a lower social class.

So, yes, the Cinderella vibes are strong here, but Bridgerton is best when subverting the fairy tale tropes at its foundation. What else can you expect from the season? Read on for everything we know about Bridgerton season 4.

Bridgerton season 4 follows free spirit Benedict as he searches for the mysterious masked woman who charmed him at his mother’s masquerade ball. What he doesn’t know is that the Lady in Silver is Sophie Baek, a maid on a lower social stratum than the Bridgertons.

“We start with a character trope that we’ve seen a million times before, which is a maid who falls for someone above her station,” said Bridgerton showrunner Jess Brownell in a chat with Entertainment Weekly. “But I think a lot of times in these classic Cinderella-like stories, Cinderella is a bit of a damsel in distress. And, in the case of Sophie Baek, she is no such thing. We get to watch a very headstrong young woman try to decide her fate for herself and pick up the courage to believe in and dream for a life greater than the one she currently has.”

With a love story that bridges social divides, season 4 also allows the series to center the staff in ways it hasn’t previously. “We talked a lot about going downstairs and how that would affect the overall tone of the show and I think, actually, it seamlessly blends into the themes that we were trying to explore this season,” Brownell said. “Benedict very much lives in a fantasy world. Sophie very much lives in a harsher reality. The idea is that, for each of them, neither of those stations are where they need to live in order to find true love.”

But Bridgerton is still an ensemble series, and the new episodes will also make time for season 3 matches Colin and Penelope, as well as John Stirling (Victor Alli) and Francesca Bridgerton (Hannah Dodd). Penelope, in particular, has some unfinished business, as she was revealed as scandal sheet author Lady Whistledown at the end of last season.

“It means that she’s now a public scandal writer, which is going to be a tricky balance,” Brownell told EW in our season 3 postmortem. “She is the Regency Perez Hilton now. She has everyone knowing who she is. After her arc this season, she’s going to be wrestling with accountability and with righteousness and trying to figure out what the right path is to use her pen responsibly.”

What book is Bridgerton season 4 based on?

Luke Thompson as Benedict Bridgerton in ‘Bridgerton’ season 4.

Season 4 of Bridgerton is adapted primarily from 2001’s An Offer From a Gentleman, the third book in Quinn’s book series.

Speaking with EW, Brownell called it the “easiest book to adapt” thus far. “It lent itself really closely to television structure for a love story. There are just a lot of rich set pieces that gave us juicy conflict and high stakes. I think fans will be happy to see quite a few of the set pieces from the book in the show.”

Is there a Bridgerton season 4 trailer?

As of this writing, a proper trailer for Bridgerton season 4 is still forthcoming, but a date announcement clip released in October 2025 offered some brief glimpses of Benedict and Sophie’s masked meet-cute.

Who’s in the Bridgerton season 4 cast?

Florence Hunt as Hyacinth Bridgerton, Claudia Jessie as Eloise Bridgerton, Michelle Mao as Rosamund Li, and Isabella Wei as Posy Li in ‘Bridgerton’ season 4.

Luke Thompson’s Benedict will be the Bridgerton of note in season 4.

“We’ve watched three seasons of Benedict having a very good time and being good at everything, but unable to commit to any one thing,” Brownell told EW. “And I think, at the top of season 4, that’s worn a little thin for him. I think he senses that something is missing in his life — even if he isn’t ready to accept it — but once he meets the masked woman in the first episode, everything will change for him.”

Joining the cast as Sophie is Ha, a veteran of Paramount+’s Halo (2022–2024) and Netflix’s The Survivors (2025). Though the season will explore her budding romance with Benedict, it will also highlight her relationship with her step-sisters — Rosamund (Michelle Mao) and Posy (Isabella Wei) — and mother, Araminta (Katie Leung).

“The Li sisters are just making their debut into society this season, and their mother (Araminta Gun, played by Katie Leung) has raised them to be perfect debutantes,” Brownell explained. “But while Rosamund has become her mother’s mini-me — a marriage mart pro chess player — Posy is dreamy and often unserious, much to her mother’s disapproval.”

Along with Rosheuvel, Newton, Coughlan, Alli, and Dodd, you can also expect to see Ruth Gemmell (Violet Bridgerton), Claudia Jessie (Eloise Bridgerton), Florence Hunt (Hyacinth Bridgerton), and Daniel Francis (Marcus Anderson). And fresh off the Wicked duology, Jonathan Bailey will reprise his role of Lord Anthony alongside Simone Ashley’s Kate.
