Motorola Moto G Play 2024 alternatives

Ryan Haines / Android Authority

When shopping for an Android phone, it’s all but impossible not to come across ones from Motorola. Motorola releases so many handsets each year, ranging from budget models to top-of-the-line foldables. Not all of them are winners, but many are very good.

It’s always a good idea to keep current Motorola phones on your radar, but what about older models? Choosing an older Motorola phone over a new one can often be a good idea — especially if you’re looking to save some cash on your next smartphone purchase. Since Motorola releases countless new phones each year, older models quickly become available at significant discounts.

But with so many older Motorola phones to choose from, how do you know which ones are still worth buying? I’ve done the hard work for you and selected five older Motorola phones that are still very much worth it in late 2025/early 2026.

What do you think is the best older Motorola phone to buy in late 2025?

The pros and cons of buying an older Motorola phone

Before diving into those five phones, there are a few things to consider when buying an older Motorola handset — both good and bad.

Similar to our buying guidance for older Samsung phones, year-over-year upgrades for Motorola phones aren’t always particularly impressive. You could buy a 2025 Moto G or Motorola Edge to say you have the latest and greatest, but the actual changes compared to the previous generation are often minimal. In some cases, you could actually end up with a worse phone by buying the newest model. For example, the recently announced Moto G Power (2026) lacks wireless charging, even though the 2025 version has it.

Two other benefits are pricing and availability. Motorola regularly offers generous discounts on all of its phones, and that’s even more true for its older devices. Even better, Motorola often still sells its older smartphones well after successors have been released. That means you can buy an older Motorola phone and still easily get a brand new version with a fresh warranty, without having to deal with a refurbished or renewed model.

On the flip side, the biggest downside to older Motorola phones is their lack of software updates. Motorola has one of the worst update policies of any major Android brand, often promising just two or three years of Android updates for its phones. As such, if you’re buying a Motorola phone that’s three, two, or even one year old, you’re likely buying a phone that’s on the brink of ending update support — or has even already crossed that point.

The update situation is frustrating, and if that’s a top priority for you, you’re probably better off buying a newer Motorola phone (or an older phone from another brand). But if you’re OK with sacrificing updates in favor of an otherwise great Android phone for cheap, any of the five phones below are well, well worth it.

The first older Motorola phone I want to recommend is the Moto G Power (2025). You might argue that this isn’t an “old” phone, as it was released less than a year ago, but Motorola recently announced its successor, the Moto G Power (2026). As such, it’s now old by Motorola’s standards, and still a phone you should absolutely consider.

We came away pretty impressed with the Moto G Power (2025) when we reviewed it this past February. The phone has a really nice vegan leather design, IP68 and IP69 dust/water resistance ratings, and Gorilla Glass 5 covering the display — a higher-quality glass than we usually see for budget phones. The 5,000 mAh battery is the star of the show, and with light-to-moderate use, it can provide two days of battery life. The charging options are solid, too, as the G Power supports 30W wired and 15W wireless charging.

As with any budget phone, there are downsides. While the 6.8-inch display is a good size (and features a 120Hz refresh rate), it’s an LCD panel rather than AMOLED. The performance is also a bit lacking; it’s fine for the most part, but you may notice occasional hiccups.

The Moto G Power (2025) was already a good deal when it launched at $300, but now that a few months have passed, you can currently find it on sale for just $200. And when the Moto G Power (2026) releases, you may be able to find the 2025 model for even less.

Motorola Edge (2024)

What about Motorola phones not released in 2025? There are a handful of 2024 models I’d recommend, the first being the Motorola Edge (2024). The Edge launched in June 2024 for $550 and, at the time, was a fine Android phone overshadowed by the Google Pixel 8a. But now that some time has passed, it’s a much more attractive option.

At the time of writing, the Motorola Edge (2024) is available for $250 or less, depending on where you buy it. And for that price, it’s kind of a steal. The Edge has a 6.6-inch OLED display, a faster chipset than the Moto G Power, and 256GB of base storage. While there isn’t an IP69 rating, its IP68 protection should be plenty for most people. The 5,000mAh battery is the same as the Moto G, but charging speeds are significantly faster at 68W. Overall, it’s a really solid package.

I still like the Moto G Power (2025) as an option for folks who want to spend as little as possible and prefer a bigger screen, but if you’re OK with a slightly smaller phone and have a little more cash to spend, the Motorola Edge (2024) is a great choice these days.

Motorola Razr Plus (2024)

Motorola’s Razr phones are consistently among our favorite flip foldables, but the new models — particularly the flagships — are expensive. The Motorola Razr Plus (2025) retails for $1,000, and even at its current $700 discount, it remains a costly device. What’s a person to do? Buy last year’s Motorola Razr Plus, of course.

Depending on where you shop, you can buy the Motorola Razr Plus (2024) for much less than you might expect. Motorola is currently selling a new model for $600, while Best Buy has it priced at just $500. For what was a flagship flip phone just a little over a year ago, that’s an incredible deal.

It’s even more impressive when you consider how much in common the Razr Plus (2024) shares with the Razr Plus (2025). Both phones have identical displays, chipsets, cameras, RAM, storage, battery size, and charging speeds. The only notable improvements for the 2025 model are a sturdier hinge and IP48 dust- and water-resistance. Those are nice things to have, but when the Razr Plus (2024) is so much cheaper, it’s hard to justify the current model.

If you like the idea of a flip phone but are working with a tighter budget, I have good news for you: it’s the Motorola Razr (2024). Released alongside the Razr Plus (2024), the baseline Razr has the same flip-phone design but with pared-down specs. It launched with a very competitive $700 retail price in July 2024, but you can now readily buy it for as low as $400.

Are there downsides to the Razr (2024) compared to the Plus version? Of course. Its cover screen is slightly smaller, its processor isn’t as powerful, it has less RAM, and its camera system isn’t as impressive. However, none of these things are deal-breakers. The day-to-day experience of using the Razr (2024) is still thoroughly enjoyable, and the fact that you’re getting competent specs in a foldable form factor for just $400 is kind of unbelievable.

Motorola Edge Plus (2023)

For my last pick, I’m going all the way back to May 2023. That’s when the Motorola Edge Plus (2023) was released, and it’s the last time Motorola launched a proper flagship slab phone in the US. Although it may not compete with 2025 flagship phones, the Edge Plus (2023) remains an extremely solid handset — especially now that you can buy it for so cheap.

Despite being over two years old, so much about the Edge Plus (2023) still holds up. The 6.67-inch OLED display with a 165Hz refresh rate looks outstanding, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip still provides good performance, and the triple-camera system remains solid. Plus, features such as 68W wired charging, 15W wireless charging, and 512GB of base storage have aged like a fine wine. The same can be said of the Edge Plus’s design, which still looks sleek and polished all these years later.

Motorola still sells the Edge Plus (2023) for $400 new, which is a really great price for the phone you’re getting. And if you’re OK with buying a renewed model, you can spend as little as $300. For a flagship Android phone that retailed for $1,100 just a couple of years ago, that’s not too shabby at all.

The Motorola Edge Plus (2023) combines premium performance, excellent wired charging, and a refined construction, and does so while lowering the asking price to its most competitive point in a long time.
