The New York Yankees are being linked to pitchers in MLB trade rumors.
The New York Yankees may need to turn to the trade market to improve the team’s roster. New York has been linked to plenty of top free agents in ongoing MLB rumors, but it has been a quiet offseason for the Yankees.
Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter outlined five potential moves for the Yankees to make in order to “salvage the offseason.” One of these ideas involves the Yankees landing a veteran starting pitcher in exchange for a “potential future star.”
The proposed MLB trade has the Yankees acquire Miami Marlins pitcher Edward Cabrera for outfielder Jasson Domínguez. Who says no to this trade pitch?
Let’s dive into the pros and cons of the Yankees-Marlins trade proposal.
Yankees Could Cut Ties With ‘Future Star’ Jasson Dominguez
At just 22 years old, Dominguez still has plenty of promise. Yet, the Yankees might prefer to bolster their pitching staff with the addition of Cabrera. Reuter argues that it is a move the Yankees should make despite Dominguez’s upside.
“Still only 22 years old, Domínguez posted a 101 OPS+ with 10 home runs, 47 RBI and 23 steals over 123 games in his first full season in the majors, and he has long been regarded as a potential future star,” Reuter wrote in a December 19, 2025, story titled, “Yankees Free-Agency and Trade Blueprint to Salvage the Offseason in 5 Steps.”
“However, he logged a middling .618 OPS with five extra-base hits in 120 plate appearances after the All-Star break and was a non-factor down the stretch, so the Yankees could opt to move him while upside still drives his value,” Reuter added.
“Flipping him to an offense-needy team in the Marlins in exchange for Edward Cabrera would fill a spot in the starting rotation to help bridge the gap to Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodón returning.”
The Yankees Continue To Be Linked to Veteran Pitchers in MLB Rumors
Cabrera is not exactly a household name, but the pitcher is coming off a standout season with the Marlins. The pitcher went 8-7 in 2025 with a 3.53 ERA and a career-high 150 strikeouts.
More good news for the Yankees about this potential move: Cabrera is on a team-friendly $3.7 million contract for 2026. Whether Cabrera or another veteran, pitching continues to be a position to watch for the Yankees as the club looks to make moves in the coming weeks.
Aaron Boone on Yankees OF Jasson Domínguez: ‘I Expect Him to be a Regular Player for Us’
A deal like this might make sense on paper, but the Yankees are not talking like a team that is planning to part ways with Dominguez. Manager Aaron Boone has been vocal about his desire for Dominguez to be have an important role on the Yankees next season.
“I still really like his ceiling,” Boone said of Dominguez, per FanSided. “I think he did a lot of really good things this year.
“But again, you’ve got to see where the winter takes you and what the roster looks like. I expect him to be a regular player for us.”
The pressure is on the Yankees to make more significant moves if the franchise wants to be a legitimate World Series contender in 2026. It is always a balancing act for clubs looking to prepare for the future while also competing in the present.
