The second running of High Limit International at Australia’s state-of-the-art Perth Motorplex that’s converging big-name drivers from both the United States and The Land Down Under kicked off in exciting fashion with Sunday’s $15,000-to-win opening night program.Â
Carrying over the momentum from his 28th-to-second surge from Friday’s Boxing Day at the 3/8-mile oval, Corey Day fended off Aussie native Kaiden Manders for his first career Perth victory in his second-ever appearance at the track. Day, who topped Manders by a half second, commanded 21 of 30 laps and made his decisive move to the lead via slide job on Lap 9.
Leading the opening eight laps, Manders worked his way back around Day briefly following a restart for the feature’s lone caution for Kyle Larson on Lap 22, but Day sprung right back on Lap 23 to regain control for good. Larson’s stoppage with 10 laps remaining was for his flat right-rear tire. The two-time NASCAR Cup champ salvaged a 17th-place finish.
Rico Abreu was among the 19 drivers who failed to qualify for Sunday’s feature ahead of Monday’s final prelim preceding Tuesday’s $110,000-to-win USD finale.
