When you walk into a supermarket in Australia, chances are it will have self-serve checkouts. Some stores might exclusively have the technology and will have rid themselves of human checkouts altogether.

Woolworths revealed to Yahoo Lifestyle that self-serve checkouts have been rolled out to 98 per cent of their supermarkets. But you won’t find the fancy tech at the Acacia Ridge Woolies in Queensland.

It’s part of a dying breed of supermarkets that solely have manned checkouts.

Acacia Ridge is a suburb in Brisbane that’s a little more than 15 kilometres south of the CBD.

A shopper posted about the lack of self-serve checkouts at this store on social media and many where thrilled about it.

“Man, that express lane is taking me back to 2007,” said one viewer.

“Wow. I didn’t even realise there was a store that didn’t have it,” added another.

“Good old school service, wish there were more like them,” wrote a third.

A Yahoo Australia poll of more than 1,200 people found 60 per cent like manned checkouts because it “keeps someone employed”.

A further 22 per cent felt it was “easier” using a manned checkout compared to a self-serve checkout, while 10 per cent used it because they usually had a large amount of groceries to scan.

While the serve-serve checkouts have copped some flak from disgruntled shoppers, there are plenty of others who love them.

Some praise them for allowing them to do their shopping without any human interaction, while others say they’re great when you’ve only got a few items to scan.

Woolworths said 83 per cent of customers opt for a self-serve checkout when they have 20 items or less.

They first appeared at Woolies in 2008 and have become extremely popular in the years since.

“We know some customers prefer to be served by a team member, and that’s why we always have a staffed checkout open at all times in all our supermarkets,” a spokesperson told Yahoo Lifestyle.

“Our self-serve checkouts offer a fast alternative for smaller shops and millions of customers use them every single day.

“As customer buying habits have shifted, we are seeing more frequent, smaller basket sizes, and a strong customer preference for a quicker and easier self-serve checkout experience.

“Today we employ more team members in our stores than ever before, helping us serve customers in a range of new ways, including hand-picking online orders for rapid grocery delivery and Direct to Boot.”

The Woolworths in Sunnybank, which is just one suburb over from Acacia Ridge, was similarly called out last year over its lack of self-serve checkouts.

However, that supermarket underwent a refurbishment last year and had self-checkout technology installed.
