Boxing Day is the day after Christmas Day, December 26.
The Boxing Day sales are a time for retailers to get rid of old stock for the new year, and drop some pretty hefty bargains to entice shoppers to buy before the year’s end.
But where did the name come from? Back in the 1800s, ‘Boxing Day’ would be when the affluent would give their servants and staff a day off and bequeath them with a boxed gift they would take home to share with their families.
Now the day is widely regarded as one of Australia’s biggest shopping events of the year, accompanied of course by the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales.
