After failing in his quest to play in a competitive NFL fixture, Wales speedster Louis Rees-Zammit has revealed that he should be joining a new rugby club soon.
The 24-year-old announced recently that he would be returning to the 15-man game after trying his hand at American football and said he has already been contacted by rugby union clubs who want to acquire his services.
“I mean, I obviously can’t name teams, but we’ve had a load of interest, which is unbelievable,” Rees-Zammit told Sky Sports. “You know, I’m very grateful for that. We’re still going through what the full plan is for me.
“Obviously the season starts pretty soon. So it’s about finding the right team for me in terms of location, in terms of how quick I’ve got to get into camp.
‘All of these things are going to happen pretty sharpish’
“And because the season’s right around the corner, so all of these things are going to happen pretty sharpish.
“So me and my brother are going through negotiations and seeing teams interested, which is amazing. So we should find out in the next week or so.”
Rees-Zammit opted to switch codes in January 2024, shortly before Wales’ Six Nations squad announcement, but after unsuccessful stints with the Kansas City Chiefs and the Jacksonville Jaguars he is making his way back to rugby union although he said he feels he made the right decision to explore his chances in the NFL.
“It’s one that I would never change, no regrets,” he said. “I was fully into it, fully backed myself.
“And sometimes it doesn’t work out the way you want it to, but I think now is a perfect time to come back to rugby and do what I’ve always loved doing, and that’s playing rugby and playing for my country.”
After leaving rugby union with 32 Test caps for Wales under his belt, Rees-Zammit joined the NFL International Player Pathway, which gives elite athletes from around the world the chance to earn a spot on an NFL roster.

He initially signed a contract with the Chiefs but was then axed from their roster before penning a deal with the Jaguars last August.
Changed positions
The former Wales, Gloucester and British & Irish Lions wing initially played as a running back during his stint with the Chiefs but changed positions to wide receiver when he joined the Jags.
Despite that switch, Rees-Zammit did not make his debut for the Jaguars during the 2024 NFL regular season although he was part of the Florida-based outfit’s practice squad as he continued to learn the intricacies of American football.
His contract was initially not renewed by the Jags, which meant he was a free agent, but the club eventually offered him a new deal which boosted his hopes of finally making his NFL debut and he signed the active roster deal for the forthcoming 2025 season.
However, that will not happen now and when asked how close he came to making a regular season match appearance in the NFL, Rees-Zammit said: “It’s tough to say.
“The competition is so high, there’s so many players, you can never really tell how close you are, just purely because of how competitive it is and how many players are in the squad.
“And even some players that are on the active squad don’t get to suit up in games. So that just goes to show how competitive it is.
“And it’s something that obviously I really wanted to do, it was my dream, but it’s one that I’ve gone out there, I’ve tried it, I’ve given it a good go and maybe it hasn’t worked out.
“So, you know, it’s the perfect time now.”
