Sam Kerr has plenty to look forward to when she says “I do” today, but it seems there’s one wedding-related phrase she’s keen to never hear again.

Posting on Instagram Stories yesterday ahead of her New Year’s Eve wedding to fellow football star Kristie Mewis, Kerr shared a photo of the couple in the gym.

“Last day I ever have to hear about the wedding shred,” the Aussie sporting icon quipped.

The two athletes will exchange vows today in Perth, Kerr’s hometown, after announcing their engagement in 2023.

The big day comes seven months after Kerr and Mewis welcomed their first child, son Jagger, in May.

Mewis has shared her excitement in an Instagram post, sharing a gallery of photos yesterday as preparations were underway.

“Tomorrow,” she wrote.

The US soccer star recently shared some of the details of the event on her sister and fellow footballer Sam Mewis’ podcast The Women’s Game.

The wedding will be held at a private home later today with 120 guests, likely to include many of Kerr’s Matildas teammates.

“I know people have way bigger weddings than that, but that’s a lot for me to wrap my head around,” Mewis admitted during the December 20 episode.

“Talking to 120 people in one night is a lot. The thing that worries me is that I won’t be able to give enough time to everybody, so that’s what I’m stressing about right now.”

The ceremony “doesn’t start until later” because of the date it’s being held on.

“We kind of shifted everything later because we want to celebrate New Year’s Eve with everybody,” Mewis said.

“I’m a little bit nervous about the heat. It is going to be a very hot Australian summer.”

While baby Jagger is too young to have a role in the ceremony, he’ll be walked down the aisle by Kerr.

“That’s going to be gut-wrenching for me. I will sob when that happens,” Mewis admitted.

Mewis said the couple won’t go on a honeymoon straight away due to their football commitments.

“But we are talking about going to the men’s World Cup, which I know isn’t very, like, honeymoonish,” she added.

Kerr also discussed the upcoming wedding earlier this month on the Mewis sisters’ joint podcast Mewis Squared.

The Matildas captain offered a diplomatic answer when asked if her fiance had been “a bridezilla”.

“It comes from a good place, but I had to have a talk to her this morning and say that everyone is coming to celebrate us and you can’t make their experience perfect,” Kerr said.

“We’re going to offer what we offer and if they don’t like it, then they’ll organise something else or do something else.

“Like, we can’t spoon-feed them, they’ll all adults.”

She added jokingly, “Our wedding is going to be amazing, but Kristie obviously cares so much about people’s experience that she’s sacrificing my experience.”

Kerr said she couldn’t wait until she, Mewis and their guests were ”all blind drunk, partying [on] New Year’s Eve in our suits and just having a grand old time.”

The couple’s relationship began in 2020; they met through global football tournaments while representing Australia and the US.
