A release from the Department of Employment and Economic Development says the store will shut down on Aug. 29, impacting approximately 180 employees.
COON RAPIDS, Minn. — Walmart fans in Coon Rapids will have to find a new place to shop when the retail giant closes the doors on its location on Riverdale Drive NW later this month.Â
A release from the Department of Employment and Economic Development’s(DEED) Rapid Response Team says Walmart store 1562 will permanently close on Aug. 29. Approximately 180 employees will be permanently laid off beginning on Oct. 31, but will have a 90-day window to apply for open positions at other area Walmart or Sam’s Club locations.Â
DEED says employees impacted by this closing are not represented by a union.Â
In a Facebook post, Coon Rapids City Council Member Pat Carlson recalled when the store was built as an anchor of the Riverdale Crossing Shopping Center in 1990, saying his neighbor — who was a regional manager for Walmart — told him the location had the highest sales numbers in the state before the corporation moved to “Superstores.”Â
“It’s hard to compete with superstores and online shopping,” Carlson reflected.Â
It bothered me to hear that our Walmart (13020 Riverdale Drive) is closing on August 29th. This is a corporate decision,…

Carlson also told constituents the closing is a corporate decision and there isn’t anything the city can do about it, other than work to help find another anchor tenant to fill the space.Â
