Although it was the third round, not the final round that his father Tiger made famous, Charlie Woods donned red and black Thursday at the Junior PGA Championship and shot a second consecutive 66 that featured nine birdies. He is tied for second place at 12-under total, but seven shots behind leader Lunden Esterline, who also shot 66.

MORE: Stop worrying about Charlie Woods

The 16-year-old Woods opened with a 70 on Tuesday and was well down the leaderboard until a second-round 66 vaulted him 39 spots and into contention for one of junior golf’s most prestigious titles. On Thursday at Purdue University’s Ackerman-Allen Course, Woods went out in 34 with four birdies and two bogeys and then made three birdies in the last five holes to collect nine birdies for the second straight day.

Pennson Badgett, from North Carolina, is tied with Woods in second place. He shot 67. Esterline’s 66 consisted of five birdies and no bogeys. The Kansan is 19 under par.

Thirty-three boys made the second cut and will play the final round Friday for the title.

Woods earned his first big junior title earlier this summer at an AJGA event at Streamsong Resort in Florida, where he shot 15-under to win against a top field. Just last week he missed the 36-hole cut at the US Junior in Dallas, an event his father won three consecutive years.

On the girls’ side, Asterisk Talley is 12-under-par after rounds of 68-65-69. She’s two ahead of Zoe Cusack.

Talley, 16, has been one of the best players in amateur golf for years despite her young age. She was runner-up this year at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur and the 2024 US Girls’ Junior and US Women’s Amateur. She played on the 2024 US Curtis Cup team, has won numerous top junior events and has made the cut in several professional events, including the 2024 US Women’s Open. She’s ranked 14th in the Women’s World Amateur Golf Ranking.

Thursday at the Junior PGA, Talley opened with birdies on the first two holes, then made two more with two bogeys the rest of the way to shoot two-under 69. Cusack shot 71 to fall out of a tie and drop to second place with 18 holes remaining.
