Kyle Tucker remains available on the free agent market, widely regarded as the best player still unsigned. The 28-year-old outfielder was a centerpiece for the Chicago Cubs last season, helping guide the team back to the postseason and establishing himself as one of the most impactful players in their lineup.
Tucker posted a .266 batting average, .377 on-base percentage and .841 OPS while adding 22 home runs, 25 stolen bases and 73 RBIs across 136 games. His ability to contribute in every facet of the game made him one of Chicago’s most valuable players.

Despite that production and the Cubs’ investment, having traded away a significant package to acquire him from the Houston Astros just one offseason ago, there has been little traction between the two sides on a new deal.

Tucker built a strong reputation in the clubhouse last year, forming close bonds with teammates. Cubs catcher Carson Kelly, in particular, has maintained that connection.
When Tucker posted a slideshow on social media celebrating the new year and reflecting on memories from 2025 with his wife, Kelly responded on Instagram with a simple message. “Happy New Year Kyle👋.”

The uncertainty surrounding Tucker’s future has drawn attention across the league. Mark Powell of FanSided recently reported, “The longer Tucker stays on the market, the worse his prospects of a long-term contract get. Tucker knows this. Executives know this. Even Tucker’s agent, Casey Close, surely knows this.”
Powell suggested that Tucker could pursue a high-AAV, short-term contract with the goal of reaching free agency again next winter. He emphasized that Tucker remains a highly productive player, and a deal in the range of $50 million per year over two seasons or just over $40 million per year across three seasons could be appealing for both Tucker and the Cubs.

For Chicago, the uncertainty looms large. Losing Tucker after only one season would be a major setback for a club that appeared to be building momentum. His situation will remain one of the most closely watched storylines of the offseason, with the potential to reshape the balance of power in MLB depending on where he ultimately signs.
