GRAND RAPIDS, MI – A new member has joined the family at John Ball Zoo.
The Grand Rapids zoo announced on Friday, Aug. 1, that a snow leopard cub had been born to mom Yuki earlier this week.
“Both mom and cub are doing well, snuggled up in their cozy den,” the zoo said on Facebook — four days after the cub’s birth July 28. “For now, they’ll remain behind the scenes while they bond and grow stronger.”
The zoo called the birth “an important step” in protecting a vulnerable species under a snow leopard species survival plan.
Species survival plans at institutions accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums help manage breeding and transfer of specific species or sub-species of animals.
There are roughly 600 snow leopards in accredited zoos around the world, according to the nonprofit Snow Leopard Trust, and the Environmental Literacy Council credits about 250 of those with being in American zoos.

The zoo has featured other warm imagery of Yuki and her offspring on social media. On Friday, a video showed Yuki laying with and grooming the cub.
