In the F1 movie, Plan C stands for ‘combat’, but maybe for a LEGO F1 fan it can mean ‘construction’. Just before Formula One moves into a brand new set of regulations and an expanded grid, LEGO has added an eleventh team to their lineup of F1 cars – 77252 APXGP Team Race Car, the striking black and gold APXGP livery from 2025’s F1: The Movie, starring Brad Pitt and Damson Idris.

Let’s take a closer look at this late addition to the grid, and LEGO’s first fictional F1 car, and see if it is truly built for combat!

Unboxing

The box has the standard Speed Champions F1 design, except it is labeled as “F1: The Movie” on the front rather than just the standard red F1 logo. The back shows off the car inside the garage, complete with drivers Sonny Hayes and Joshua Pearce.

Inside are four numbered paper bags, an unnumbered plastic bag with the chassis and wheels, an instruction manual, and a sticker sheet.

The sticker sheet contains quite a number of stickers, although it isn’t as expansive as a couple of the other F1 cars have been.

Minifigures

This set includes two minifigures, pretty unusual for a Speed Champions set – but includes both Sonny Hayes (played by Brad Pitt) and Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris) which will delight fans of the movie.

The APXGP uniform looks good in LEGO minifigure form, as do the drivers with their new and exclusive face prints.

These faces are double-sided, with the reverse not featuring any sunglasses.

These alternate faces are, of course, a much better fit for when the minifigures don their racing helmets! The helmets use the mold introduced for the F1 lineup in 2025 and look stunning, with printed striping on the top as well as the drivers’ names in cursive.

Not a bad translation to LEGO minifigure form.

Completed Model

The APXGP car uses a similar construction to the rest of the F1 Speed Champions lineup – if you’ve built one, you’ll find a lot of key features familiar, with subtle changes to minor details.

This model has a slightly simpler design than most, but that isn’t to say that it’s lacking in unique or innovative build techniques. The shaping of the sidepods is flatter and smoother, to reflect the design of the real-world filming car (that was actually based on an F2 car).

Both stickers and prints are dotted across the model, although the slopes that form the center of the front wing are printed with nice gold details.

The livery continues to the back, with a lovely camo-like design across the prints and stickers which reflects the pattern on the real-world car. My only gripe is the colour of the gold on the stickers/prints does not match the brick-built gold details, which makes for a strange two-tone like design!

It’s a shame LEGO weren’t able to make the colour-matching better as it’s quite obvious across the model.

The rear wing has all the standard details including the rear exhaust, printed 1×1 tile for the rear lights, DRS activator, and sponsorship stickers.

The halo of the car is made out of a flexible rubber piece, and can be lifted up to place a minifigure inside.

The driver gets the excellent printed video game controller piece as the steering wheel, along with a pair of wing mirrors represented by black-coloured spoons.

You can place either Sonny Hayes or Joshua Pearce in the driver’s seat, and the set actually comes with a printed and unprinted variant of the 1×2 ingot piece to represent the T-cam that corresponds with each driver! The car does not have a printed driver number so you do not need to swap out anything else.

Unsurprisingly, the APXGP car looks great alongside other cars from the F1 Speed Champions line, following the same scale and design language. That said, the other Speed Champions cars are based on the 2024 F1 cars, whereas the liveries in the F1 movie were from 2023, so there are discrepancies for some of the teams if you were planning on displaying them together!

Final Thoughts

The F1 Speed Champions lineup has been stellar, and 77252 APXGP Team Race Car is no exception. It will probably be the only set we get based on the F1 movie, but it does justice to the design of the car and the immortalisation of the two drivers in LEGO form is done brilliantly.

The price is also reasonable considering the piece count, size of the final model, and the fact that this set includes one more minifigure than the typical LEGO Speed Champions set. My only main critique is the colour matching of the gold elements, which hampers what is otherwise a visually impressive model that LEGO Formula 1 fans will no doubt be excited to add to their collections.

Build

The model looks excellent and captures the APXGP car in LEGO form really well – just the colour matching of the gold is disappointing.

Minifigures

The minifigures look excellent, especially the fantastic dual-moulded helmets, and the inclusion of two figures is commendable.

Real Value

Pretty reasonably priced considering the size and quality, along with the extra minifigure.

Innovation

Although not as crazy as some of the other F1 Speed Champions sets, this set still includes detailed build techniques.

Keepability

This may be the only set we get based on the F1 movie, and it’s a pretty well-done set all around.
