HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – MMA promotion Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship held an open tryout for local fighters for Sunday in Pearl City.
Hosted by BKFC hall of famer Chris Lytle and promoter T.Jay Thompson.
About a dozen local fighters were evaluated on their conditioning, striking, durability and overall readiness for the sport.
A sport which organizers say is the new up-and-coming discipline in MMA.
“They all were unknown at one point, I’ve been telling BKFC for the last couple of years that Hawaii’s got the toughest guys in the world and they decided to put my words to the test and have a tryouts here,” Thompson said. “What I’m seeing is we’ve got bangers in Hawaii and I think the sport is made for that Hawaiian fight culture, that warrior culture that’s here.”
Organizers say they hope to sign a few fighters to BKFC contracts and have them make their pro debut in Hawaii at an event tentatively scheduled for April.
