Newcastle United are protected by an eye-watering compensation package when it comes to Eddie Howe’s future at St James’ Park.
With Howe understood to be picking up around £6m a year and having at least three years to run on his current deal, a grand eight-figure fee would be required to free him from his current deal. That does not include the hefty fee it would take to lure Howe’s backroom team of Jason Tindall, Steve Purchess and Simon Weatherstone.
In a weekend in which Howe was linked with Chelsea, he was talked about as a candidate for the top job at Man United following Ruben Amorim’s exit from Old Trafford.
When Amorim’s position was under threat back in October, Howe was asked by Chronicle Live about his commitment on Tyneside.
“I’m all in (at Newcastle),” Howe told Chronicle Live when asked about links with the Manchester United job back in October.
“My commitment here is 100% here and always has been. My family is still here, and we are fighting every day to make a success of what we are doing.
“The season ahead could be a wonderful thing, and that is what we are trying to focus on, trying to make a success of the games we have coming up.”
Chronicle Live understands that Newcastle had no approach from Chelsea for Howe while Liam Rosenior prepares to take charge of the Blues after coming in from partner club Strasbourg. When asked about Howe’s presence as Toon boss, CEO David Hopkinson said on December 1: “Eddie is special.”
That statement alone brought fans to their feet at the We are United event at the STACK. And sporting director Ross Wilson then followed up with round table quotes to journalists by saying: “We have got an outstanding manager here, and from past experience, I’d certainly rather have one that other people might like rather than one that nobody likes.”
Howe had been linked with the England job in 2024 before Thomas Tuchel was appointed. The FA did not follow up interest despite a round of speculation when Gareth Southgate departed.
Suggestions in Germany are that Tuchel will leave England after the World Cup, regardless of the outcome in the US. Whether Howe’s name comes into the conversation for the international job at Wembley again remains to be seen.
But for now, the head coach sees his role firmly in the hotseat on Tyneside. Back to back wins have shushed critics with Howe describing the next few weeks as pivotal.
Newcastle’s fate in both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup will be decided while they must contest the last two matches of the Champions League group stage against PSV Eindhoven and Paris St-Germain bidding to net either an automatic slot or play-off place in spring.
Club owners PIF want to see Newcastle qualify for the Champions League via the Premier League once again after last season’s fifth place finish.
