Campbell will need a few days before he makes decisions, and gave himself an “F” this season

On Monday, he was asked if he plans to stay the course or make wholesale changes, on the heels of a down year. It’s something Campbell’s alluded to — decisions on the horizon for him and GM Brad Holmes — but it appears Campbell is going to take his time.

“First of all, I don’t want to make any decisions that I’m not prepared to really think through,” Campbell said. “So, I’m going to need a little bit here. I’m going to need a few days to really think about this and deep dive some areas. And I’m willing to do whatever it takes. Whatever is best for this team, I’m going to do. What I believe is best for this team, I will do.”

Vague words from Campbell, but he wasn’t expected to say much, anyway. This was the last time we’ll talk to him before the combine. By then, the Lions could have new coaches on staff. At a minimum, he needs to hire a tight ends coach, after the departure of Tyler Roehl to Iowa State. But the futures of his coordinators are still being assessed.

That said, if there are going to be high-level changes, expect a decision to come sooner rather than later, as staff meetings unfold this week. Anthony Lynn was fired a day after the 2021 season concluded, for reference.

As for Campbell, he’s not absolving himself from the problems we saw this season.

“Not good enough,” Campbell said of his individual coaching effort. “We didn’t get in. I mean, we underachieved, so not good. I’m going to give myself a freaking ‘F.’”
