More than a dozen patients are being treated after a truck collided with multiple cars at a major road connecting Wollongong and south-west Sydney.

New South Wales Ambulance said the semi-trailer collided with five cars after hitting a guardrail on Picton Road near Cataract, north of Wollongong, about midday on Wednesday.

Paramedics, including a helicopter, are tending to 13 patients at the scene.

A man in his 30s with pelvic, chest and arm injuries is being airlifted to a Sydney hospital in a serious condition.

Three other people are being transported to Wollongong Hospital in stable conditions.

The male truck driver has been freed from the wreckage without injury by Fire and Rescue NSW.

Meanwhile, specialist fire trucks are working to contain about 100 litres of spilled diesel.

Superintendent Adam Dewberry said the fuel was not a threat to vehicles.

“Rural Fire Service are providing fire protection,” Mr Dewberry said.
