As a cyclist myself, I quite enjoyed the article about Samer Abouhamad, who cycled across six continents (“Man rolls through 6 continents, 61 countries on bike,” Metro, Jan. 5). I admired his gumption and agree with his sentiment that face to face, we’re all human and most of us tend more toward kindness than evil.
Nonetheless, it struck me that a trip such as his would be a far more challenging solo undertaking for a woman, with dangers a man would be unlikely to encounter.
I read a post (probably in some cycling group) that going through the world as a woman is a bit like traveling the roads as a cyclist — the infrastructure (in this country, at least) has been built for the cars, many of the drivers will resent you, and you are the one with the most at risk in any encounter with them.
