The Toronto Blue Jays are being tabbed as the expected destination of Chicago Cubs star Kyle Tucker.
The Toronto Blue Jays have already had an impressive offseason, but their biggest move may be yet to come, at least according to the latest MLB rumors. Toronto is reloading after narrowly missing out on winning the World Series.
There has been plenty of fodder on whether the Blue Jays will re-sign Bo Bichette. Meanwhile, Toronto continues to be linked to the biggest fish in MLB free agency.
There has been a lot of buzz that the Blue Jays are interested in Chicago Cubs 4-time All-Star Kyle Tucker. MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reported that the Blue Jays are the “likely destination” for Tucker.
“Tucker’s market has been relatively slow this winter, at least compared to some top free agents in recent years,” Feinsand wrote in a January 7, 2025, story titled, “What we know about Kyle Tucker’s market, and what we should expect.” “The biggest news came more than a month ago when Tucker visited the Blue Jays at their player development complex in Dunedin, Fla., though there have been few developments since then.
“Two industry sources still tabbed the Blue Jays as Tucker’s likely destination, even after Toronto signed infielder Kazuma Okamoto to a four-year, $60 million deal last week. The Blue Jays’ lineup is already formidable, but adding another big left-handed bat would cement Toronto as the frontrunners in the American League.”
Here’s what you need to know about the latest MLB rumors.
Blue Jays Target Kyle Tucker’s Next Contract Is Projected To Be in the $300 to $400 Million Range
The question for the Blue Jays is just how much Tucker will eventually command. Tucker’s expected range is $300 to $400 million, per Feinsand.
Spotrac projects Tucker’s market value to be a massive 10-year, $401 million contract. It would be quite a raise from the one-year, $16.5 million deal Tucker played on with the Cubs in 2025.
With no new contract signed, Tucker could end up inking a shorter deal with a high annual salary.
“It’s been quieter than expected for Tucker,” a National League executive told Feinsand. “That seems to be a trend among several of this offseason’s higher-tier free agents. Some of the contract forecasts we saw at the outset of the offseason have proven to be wildly optimistic.
“It seems the market is telling us that the massive deals of the last few years – [Shohei] Ohtani, Vlad [Guerrero] Jr., [Yoshinobu] Yamamoto, etc. – are more outliers than anything we should anchor to.”
The Yankees Continue To Be Linked to Cubs Star Kyle Tucker
Nothing is certain until Tucker signs a new deal. There continues to be other interested teams in Tucker, even if the Blue Jays appear to be leading the charge.
The New York Yankees are among the teams who have been heavily linked to Tucker. Yet, the expectation is that the Yankees prefer Cody Bellinger’s lower price tag. Until Bellinger is signed, the Yankees should not be ruled out in the Tucker sweepstakes.
“The Yankees and Mets are both eager to add an impact outfield bat, but sources say the two New York teams each prefer Bellinger to Tucker,” Feinsand added. “That’s not to say they won’t be in on Tucker, especially knowing that only one of them can sign Bellinger, assuming he winds up back in New York.”
