WA police are searching for a 58-year-old man following a shooting on a rural property in the state’s Midwest region, about 450 kilometres north of Perth.

Officers from the Tactical Response Group have been deployed to search for Kenneth John Giles who police allege fled with a firearm after a shot was fired on a rural property.

Police said he and a woman known to him were involved in an altercation.

They said a shot was fired from a gun during the altercation at a residence on Urawa Road, about 20km north of the small town of Mullewa.

The woman has been taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

A police spokesperson told the ABC he was still at large on Wednesday night.

Mr Giles is described as being 173cm tall, of medium build, with brown hair and brown eyes.

Residents nearby are being warned to look out for a white Nissan Patrol ute with the registration 1BIY 336 and contact police immediately on triple zero if Mr Giles is sighted.

Acting Midwest Gascoyne inspector Tom Mickelwright said it was understandable that local residents would be feeling concerned.

“However, we do have significant resources from the metropolitan area and Geraldton, including the Tactical Response Group, police air wing, detectives and general duties police officers who’re working out here tirelessly and will be working through the night to resolve this incident,” Inspector Mickelwright said.

“I encourage people to remain vigilant, aware of their surroundings, keep a look out for the vehicle of interest and anyone with information is urged to contact police immediately.”A police man looks sternly at the camera while wearing a full police uniform and high-viz vest

Inspector Mickelwright urged Mr Giles to turn himself into police.

“We’d like to resolve this incident and ensure that everyone’s welfare is accounted for,” he said.

“[Mr Giles] if you are listening, then please make yourself known to police.

Inspector Mickelwright said multiple other people who were at the property during the incident will also be interviewed.

He said police resources from Geraldton and Perth, including air wing units, were deployed overnight.

“We obviously deal with investigations day and night, in all sorts of difficult conditions and weather events etcetera,” Inspector Mickelwright said.

“Some are easier than others, but we’ll still put the same level of effort and commitment and commit the same resources to them.”

Earlier on Wednesday evening, St John Ambulance told the ABC four ambulance crews had been sent to a forward command post at Mullewa Police Station.

According to the 2021 ABS census, Mullewa has a population of just over 350 people.

The small rural community is located in WA’s Midwest region and is about 100km inland from the coastal city of Geraldton.

Mullewa is predominantly made up of farming and pastoral properties.
