Artificial intelligence roles are among the fastest-growing jobs in Australia, new research has revealed. AI literacy has become the most in-demand skill that employers are now looking for, and there are a bunch of opportunities for job seekers.

AI engineers topped this year’s LinkedIn Jobs on the Rise list for 2026, which is based on an analysis of millions of jobs started by members over the past three years. The job involves designing systems to do tasks like analysing data and making predictions.

According to recruitment firm Hays, AI engineers earn a typical salary of $190,000, but it can range from $165,000 to $250,000 a year.

AI adoption is also driving demand for roles like director of artificial intelligence, which ranked fourth on the list. The job involves overseeing the implementation of AI strategies in an organisation, with heads of artificial intelligence typically earning $250,000 a year.

LinkedIn career expert Brendan Wong says the list signals a major shift, with AI no longer a niche skill.

“This year’s list shows how quickly the job market is evolving,” Wong said.

“AI is no longer a specialist skill – it’s becoming part of everyday work and leadership. Whether you’re in tech, business or creative industries, building AI literacy and staying open to new skills will be key to future-proofing your career.”

LinkedIn found AI literacy was now the most in-demand skill Aussie employers are seeking across all jobs on its platform, with eight in 10 global leaders more likely to hire someone who was comfortable with AI tools over someone with more experience but less proficiency.

But AI is also expected to put some jobs at risk, with a study by Jobs and Skills Australia finding office clerks, receptionists, bookkeepers, and professional sales, marketing, public relations, business analysis and programming jobs were among those set to lose the most employment by 2050.

Other jobs that made the list included those in engineering, law, health and sales.

Chief risk officer came in second place, with Hays putting the typical salary at $250,000. The role involves identifying, assessing and managing potential risks that could impact an organisation’s operations, finances or reputation.

Mechanical engineers rounded out the top three, with a typical salary of $200,000 a year for managers.
