1h agoSat 2 Aug 2025 at 11:18am’It’s so risky’: SES warns against driving out in the snow
We’ve seen some pretty extraordinary video today of snow north of Tamworth and even in Queensland.
But Superintendent Ian Robinson warned people to avoid driving out in the snow.
“It’s so risky, unless you’ve actually got snow chains, even a dusting of snow can hide the black ice underneath,” he said.
“Before you know it, you’re sliding and you’re not in control of your vehicle.
“It’s a lovely thing to play in the snow, but again, we advise caution.”
1h agoSat 2 Aug 2025 at 11:14amSES expects weather will be ‘just a drizzle’ by tomorrow
The SES’s Superintendent Ian Robinson says they’re expecting the weather system will slowly move to the north and east.
“The expectation that most of this weather will have become just a drizzle by tomorrow,” he said.
“With any luck, that’ll be the case.”
1h agoSat 2 Aug 2025 at 11:09amFloodwaters should flow through ‘fairly quickly’, SES says
Superintendent Ian Robinson says six Watch and Acts remain in place.
This includes four areas — Bandon Grove, Alison Road, Bendolba and Calala — which are being warned to prepare to isolate.
“The expectation is that they may actually get cut off and become isolated,” he said.
“However, our flood analysts are assuring us that most of this water is simply going to flow through fairly quickly.”
He warned people to remain “extremely cautious” around poorly-lit causeways and backroads.
1h agoSat 2 Aug 2025 at 11:03amNSW SES: Mid North Coast ‘absolutely smashed’ by rain and wind
We’ve just had another update from Superintendent Ian Robinson, deputy commander for the SES’s northern zone.
He told ABC Newcastle that the Mid North Coast, particularly Kempsey, have been “absolutely smashed” by rain and wind this afternoon.
“They’re suffering power outages that are possibly going to extend into tomorrow,” he said.
“A number of roofs are off in that area as well.”
He says SES crews have now been stood down in that area for the night, due to safety hazards and the darkness.
“But they’ll be back on deck again first light in the morning,” he said.

3h agoSat 2 Aug 2025 at 9:44amSnowfall takes ‘many people by surprise’ABC reporter Claire Simmonds reported live from Dorrigo.
We’ve just heard from my colleague Claire Simmonds who is reporting live from Dorrigo in the Northern Tablelands.
She told ABC News she’s spent the day touring the Ebor and Guyra areas, which have seen “very intense” snowfall.
The snowfall has taken “many people by surprise”, she says.
“Quite a lot of them did get trapped by the closed roads,” she says.
“So they had about 200 people to rescue at one point.”
She’s reminded people that several Watch and Act alerts remain in place across the state, along with multiple road closures.
3h agoSat 2 Aug 2025 at 9:34am’It has officially snowed in Queensland’
We’re hearing there’s been snow in Queensland!
Sheree Anderson lives on a property just north of Dalveen near the Braeside homestead.
“The temperature dropped suddenly from 7 degrees to 2 degrees and snowed for about five to 10 mins,” she told the ABC.
“Just lightly, not really enough to settle on the ground.
“So it has officially snowed in QLD!”
She says they bought the property three years ago, and have been promising the kids that it sometimes snows there.
“They wait eagerly each winter and watch the temperature gauge drop,” she said.
“So it was nice to finally be able to deliver on the promise.”

4h agoSat 2 Aug 2025 at 8:12amWatch for ‘black ice’ on roads
North Western SES zone commander Stuart Fisher urged motorists to take care even as the temperature changes.
“As the temperature starts to change, we do get black ice and [drivers] need to be very, very careful,” he said.
What is ‘black ice’, you ask?
Black ice is a thin, transparent layer of ice that forms on roads, allowing the dark surface beneath to remain visible.
