The wait is finally over for Australian BookTokers, with the first of Emily Henry‘s book adaptations dropping on Netflix on January 9. People We Meet On Vacation is one of the most highly anticipated early releases of the year, and if you were looking for a reason to stay in tonight, this is it.
The film is based on Henry’s 2021 New York Times bestseller, which was published locally as You and Me on Vacation. If you’re anything like me, you may havefound this confusing and unwittingly re-read the book in preparation for the series. If not, your 2026 is already running smoother than mine it. (Luckily, the book is a delight.)

The film brings to life the decade-long friendship between travel blogger-turned-journalist Poppy Wright and straight-laced best friend, Alex Nilsen. Rising stars Emily Bader and Tom Blyth step into the roles, with supporting performances from Sarah Catherine Hook and Jameela Jamil.
The story traces Poppy and Alex’s friendship over the course of 10 years, from the unlikely friendship they formed when Alex drives Poppy home for the summer after their first year at the University of Chicago. What eventuates is an annual summer vacation tradition, whereby they take one trip every single year, mostly with just the two of them. The book starts with the reader learning they had a falling out two summers ago, though we don’t know why, and the book tracks us back to present day as we learn more about their intense, often sweet, and slightly complicated friendship.
The book centres the present summer, where they come back together for a summer trip in Palm Springs. But as they navigate a rental apartment with one bed and broken air conditioning (in high summer, no less), their complicated feelings provide all the juicy plot you would expect.
