GRASSROOTS motorsport in Victoria is set for a boost, with the Pakenham Auto Club receiving the long-awaited green light to proceed with the construction of an autocross track on the club’s property, some 55km from the Melbourne CBD.
Following a protracted planning process, the development was granted final approval from the Cardinia Shire Council prior to Christmas, with work on the project to be carried out by contractor Lantrak.
The plans call for an unsealed 1.1km-long track with alternate configurations available to competitors, effectively replacing earlier autocross layouts on club-controlled land in the area.
The works are the culmination of efforts that date back to 2019, when the group signed a 20-plus-20-year lease on the block, with the track set to complement other grassroots events at the site, including khanacrosses and motorkhanas.

One of the highlights of the club’s work is a highly active Junior Development Program, which enables drivers aged 12-17 to participate in training programs and events in a range of provided vehicles.
The Kay Lane grounds are adjacent to a block that has been earmarked for motorsport development for around two decades.
The Pakenham track is set to join other regional autocross venues across the state, including Avalon, Maffra, Parwan, Bagshot, Mooroopna, Kyneton and Swan Hill, while the Ballarat Light Car Club is currently on the move after its former base at the Ballarat Airport was closed.
